LONDON — Healthcare providers across Europe are increasing their outsourcing of core administrative and support functions as rising costs, regulatory demands and staffing shortages push hospitals, insurers and drugmakers to seek faster and cheaper ways to manage operations, March 30, 2026.
A report released Monday by DataM Intelligence said the European healthcare business process outsourcing market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 9.56% from 2026 to 2033, reflecting rising demand for outside help in revenue cycle management, claims processing, patient engagement and pharmaceutical support services.
The trend points to a broader shift in how healthcare organizations handle work once kept in-house, particularly as billing complexity, data requirements and clinical trial volumes increase.
AI and automation accelerate outsourcing
Healthcare outsourcing firms are expanding AI-driven services aimed at reducing administrative burdens and improving billing accuracy.
DataM Intelligence said companies including Accenture and Cognizant in March expanded automated revenue cycle management and claims-processing tools across Europe, a sign that providers are seeking technology that can cut paperwork and speed reimbursements.
Cloud-based healthcare outsourcing platforms are also gaining traction in markets including Germany, the United Kingdom and France, according to the report. These systems support remote operations, real-time analytics and secure data sharing as healthcare systems push deeper into digital transformation.
Compliance and drug development add pressure
Outsourcing is also expanding in pharmaceutical and life sciences operations.
European healthcare organizations in February accelerated the outsourcing of pharmacovigilance and clinical data management services, according to the report, as drugmakers and research groups respond to growing regulatory complexity and heavier clinical trial workloads.
That shift is widening the role of BPO providers beyond traditional back-office tasks and into compliance-driven functions that require specialized expertise.
Back-office work becomes strategic
The report said outsourcing demand is rising across provider, payer and pharmaceutical services.
For providers, major areas include patient enrollment, strategic planning, billing and patient care support. For insurers, claims management remains a key area, alongside provider management, care management and customer relationship management. In pharmaceuticals, outsourcing continues to expand across research and development, manufacturing support, sales operations and other non-clinical services.
Key companies identified in the report include Infosys BPO, Cognizant, Genpact, Tata Consultancy Services and Xerox.
Growth reflects structural strain
The market’s projected expansion reflects deeper structural pressures across European healthcare systems, including aging populations, workforce shortages and the need to manage costs without slowing care delivery.
As a result, outsourcing is increasingly being used not just as a cost-cutting tool, but as a way to manage compliance, support digital systems and keep administrative work from overwhelming frontline operations.
