MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google has started rolling out AI Inbox in Gmail, a beta feature that uses artificial intelligence to sort crowded inboxes by surfacing action items and bundling updates into summaries for users in the United States on its top-tier Google AI Ultra plan.

AI Inbox appears as a separate view alongside Gmail’s traditional inbox and is built around two main sections: “Suggested to-dos,” which flags emails that need action, and “Topics to catch up on,” which groups less urgent updates into interactive summary cards. Google says the feature is available on web, Android and iOS.

The rollout extends Google’s broader effort to weave Gemini deeper into Gmail. In January, the company said Gmail was “entering the Gemini era,” outlining AI tools to help users prioritize messages, identify important contacts and get quick briefings on inbox activity.

For now, access is narrow. Outside reports say AI Inbox is limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., a plan priced at $249.99 a month, while Google continues testing before a wider rollout. Gadgets360 and other outlets reported the feature was first introduced to a smaller group of testers in January and is powered by Gemini 3.

The feature also comes with privacy controls. Gadgets360 reported that Gmail users can turn off AI features in settings, while Google says personal Workspace data is not used to train its AI models.

The launch revives a long-running Google goal: making email less of a static message list and more of a managed workspace. Gmail already offers Smart Reply, summaries and writing tools, but AI Inbox pushes further by letting Gemini decide what matters first.

Whether users embrace it may depend on how well the AI gets the sorting right. But the beta shows Google is betting one of email’s oldest headaches: figuring out what to read, do or ignore — is now ready for automation.
