Salesforce pushes AI into Sales Calls

Salesforce is moving to embed artificial intelligence directly into live sales and customer service interactions, positioning what it calls “ambient intelligence” as the next phase of enterprise AI adoption.

At a recent AI Research roundtable, the company outlined how AI is shifting from standalone tools into always-on systems that operate inside real workflows. The focus is simple: help sales reps and service agents act faster, with less manual work, while improving consistency and compliance.

“Enterprise AI is not just about having a strong model, it’s about building a system you can trust in real workflows,” said Silvio Savarese, EVP and Chief Scientist at Salesforce AI Research.

The concept centers on AI that runs in the background during live interactions. In a demo, Salesforce showed an in-call assistant that listens to conversations, identifies customer intent, and suggests next steps in real time. The goal is to reduce note-taking, standardize follow-ups, and keep conversations aligned to outcomes rather than individual rep judgment.

That shift could have immediate implications for customer experience teams, where work happens mid-call and under pressure. Real-time guidance can shorten handle times, improve CRM data quality, and reduce training demands by giving every agent access to the same playbooks.

Salesforce also used the session to reinforce its broader push with Agentforce, which it is positioning as a full enterprise platform rather than a lightweight AI layer. The emphasis is on governance, observability, and scalability, particularly for companies operating in regulated or high-volume environments.

Yacov Salomon, EVP of Engineering for Service Cloud, pointed to early enterprise deployments as evidence that the model can scale.

“Uber used Salesforce Media Cloud to scale its ad business to $1 billion in revenue in just two and a half years, and to deliver a 70% faster sales process,” Salomon said.

Other deployments include Southwest Airlines, which reported 20% call deflection and up to 50% containment using an Agentforce FAQ agent, and Adecco Group, which is applying AI agents to personalize hiring workflows and reduce time-to-hire.

Still, the move toward real-time AI inside conversations raises new governance challenges. Companies will need to decide what data is captured, how it is stored, and which actions can be automated. Questions around consent, compliance, and accuracy are likely to become central as adoption expands.

Salesforce’s bet is that the next competitive edge in CX will not come from adding more AI features, but from making AI feel natural in the moment while remaining controllable at scale.
