Zendesk to acquire Forethought in major AI customer service push
SAN FRANCISCO — Zendesk said it plans to acquire artificial intelligence firm Forethought to expand its autonomous customer service capabilities, marking its largest deal in nearly two decades and accelerating its push into “agentic service,” March 11, 2026.
The acquisition, expected to close by the end of March pending regulatory approvals, is aimed at strengthening Zendesk’s AI agents on its Resolution Platform and advancing self-learning, automated workflows across customer service operations.
Zendesk CEO Tom Eggemeier said Forethought’s technology aligns with the company’s long-term vision of AI-driven service. “Forethought’s advanced capabilities perfectly align with our vision for agentic service,” Eggemeier said. “Together, we will be scaling self-improving AI that learns from every interaction. But technology is just the means. Resolution is our identity, and loyalty is the outcome.”
Forethought CEO Sami Ghoche said the deal reflects growing demand for AI-led customer experience tools. “Forethought was founded on the belief that AI will transform customer experience for every business,” Ghoche said.
Zendesk said its AI agents already handle up to 80% of customer interactions end-to-end, operating alongside human agents in a hybrid model. Its Resolution Platform integrates communication channels, workflows and intelligence systems into a unified service environment.
With the addition of Forethought, Zendesk expects its AI agents to become fully self-learning, capable of generating and executing complex workflows across platforms and channels, including systems that lack traditional application programming interfaces.
The acquisition is also expected to accelerate Zendesk’s product roadmap by more than a year, giving customers earlier access to advanced AI capabilities. The company said new users will also be able to adopt certain AI tools without deploying the full Zendesk platform.
The deal follows a series of acquisitions in 2025, including Unleash, HyperArc and Klaus, as Zendesk expands its artificial intelligence portfolio.
Industry analysts say the move signals increasing confidence in the maturity of AI for enterprise use. Keith Kirkpatrick, research director at The Futurum Group, said the investment reflects a broader shift in the software industry.
“At a time when many software companies are cautious or still in pilot mode, this investment reflects strong confidence in both the technology and the market’s readiness,” Kirkpatrick said.
Zendesk was also recently named a Strong Performer in the Forrester Wave report for the first quarter of 2026, receiving top marks in multiple categories under its current offerings.
The acquisition underscores a broader trend in customer experience technology, where autonomous AI systems are expected to handle a growing share of interactions, while human agents focus on complex or sensitive cases.
